A brief history of tap
An African-American dance born from the fusion of African dances and Irish jigs and reels, tap dance emerged in the mid-19th century in the United States. Its origins trace back to New Orleans, where enslaved Africans replaced the drums they were forbidden with the rhythm of their feet, keeping alive the traditions they had carried from Africa.
The first great icon in tap dance history is Master Juba, a formerly enslaved man who became a leading attraction of the Minstrel Shows. From the 1920s, tap appeared in the "Black revues" (such as the Broadway musical Shuffle Along) but remained confined to a small circle of insiders — most famously the Hoofers Club in Harlem.
In the 1930s, Bill Robinson, an African-American dancer from Harlem, caused a sensation with his sophisticated rhythms (danced up on the toes) and his spectacular technique. He quickly became a Hollywood star and carried an entire generation of tap dancers in his wake. From the 1940s onwards, tap dance took off and became essential to Hollywood's great musicals — the golden age of tap (Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Rita Hayworth…).
In the 1960s and 70s, the Hoofers — improvising tap dancers rooted in the jazz tradition — deepened the technique of the instrument and rivaled the greatest jazz drummers in musicality (Buster Brown, Baby Laurence, Chuck Green, Jimmy Slyde). They gave tap dance its full recognition as an art form, turning improvisation into a true instrumental language.
From the 1990s, tap dance returned to center stage, adapting to pop and urban rhythms (Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk on Broadway). This era of renewal was embodied by two legendary dancers: Gregory Hines and Savion Glover. Today, tap is danced to every style of music.
